Over 80 Companies Sponsor Hiring Event in New York City; Veterans Available For Media

WHAT: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, will partner with U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Chamber Foundation and Veterans on Wall Street (VOWS) for a Hiring Our Heroes hiring fair in New York City on June 21st. The event is free for service members and veterans of all eras and their spouses as they transition into the civilian workforce. Coinciding with the Hiring Our Heroes hiring fair will be the second annual Veterans on Wall Street (VOWS) conference, a one-day conference sponsored by Bank of America, Citi, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs that is dedicated to honoring former military personnel and employees currently in the National Guard and Reserve by facilitating career and business opportunities in the financial services industry. VOWS will offer relevant transition related panels, breakout sessions and employment workshops throughout the day.

The hiring fair is uniquely designed to connect Northeast veterans with critical employment resources, including resume reviews, interview skills training and more to ease their transition from combat to career. It follows a new report from the Department of Labor showing new veteran unemployment climbed to 12.7 percent in May. In 2011, the state of New York reported 16.7 percent veteran unemployment.

WHEN: Thursday, June 21st, 8:00 AM-1:00 PM EST. Media are invited to cover for photos and interviews with IAVA Member Veterans. Media must RSVP in advance to Michelle McCarthy, michelle@iava.org.

WHERE: The Atrium at 60 Wall Street New York, NY 10005

WHO: The event is open to veterans of all eras and their spouses. Attendees will be able to draw on a host of employment resources and workshops provided by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, VOWS and IAVA. Employers will also learn ways they can help bridge the military-civilian divide and network with veterans. More than 80 companies including GameStop, Coca Cola, American Express and Edward Jones are expected to participate with jobs available for veterans of all ranks and levels of experience.  Paul Rieckhoff, Iraq veteran and IAVA Founder and Executive Director, and Kevin Schmiegel, Lt. Colonel, USMC (Ret.) and Executive Director of the Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative, will be available for interviews at the fair. Veterans can sign up for the hiring fair and learn more about participating employers here.  To register for the VOWS conference, please visit www.veteransonwallstreet.com.

In the coming months, IAVA and Hiring Our Heroes will sponsor Smart Job Fairs in Atlanta, Dallas and San Francisco. Veterans can register to attend in these cities here.

In 2012, IAVA is tackling veterans’ unemployment on every front, in both the public and private sectors. The job fairs are part of IAVA’s Employment Program to engage both sectors on solutions to ease veterans’ transition from combat to career.  In Washington, IAVA is calling on Congress to pass legislation to incentivize the hiring of veterans, strengthen job protections and create new programs to ensure they are career-ready after service. In the private sector, the program brings together corporate partners including Microsoft, Google, jcpenney, Citi and the Chamber to host job fairs, career skills workshops and hiring initiatives for new veterans.  For a complete list of our partners and to learn more about IAVA’s Employment Program, click here.
