IAVA, U.S. Chamber Host Smart Job Fair in Chicago for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans

JPMorgan Chase, MillerCoors, ComEd and over 40 Companies sponsor hiring event at Chicago Hilton

WHAT: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, will host an innovative Smart Job Fair in Chicago with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for service members, veterans and spouses transitioning into the civilian workforce. The fair is the second of five events being held across the country as part of IAVA’s Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America partnership with the Chamber. The fair is uniquely designed to connect Midwest veterans with critical employment resources, including resume reviews, interview skills training and more to ease their transition from combat to career. It follows a new report from the Department of Labor showing new veteran unemployment climbed to 12.7 percent in May. In 2011, the unemployment rate for new veterans in Illinois was 9.5 percent.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 6th, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM CST. Media are invited to cover for photos and interviews with IAVA Member Veterans. Media must RSVP in advance to Michelle McCarthy, michelle@iava.org.

WHERE: The Hilton Chicago at 720 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605.

WHO: Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their spouses can attend the Smart Job Fair free of charge and draw on a host of employment resources and workshops provided by IAVA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Employers will also learn ways they can help bridge the military-civilian divide and meet other vetted and confirmed veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 40 companies including JPMorgan Chase, MillerCoors, Prudential, GameStop, ComEd and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois are expected to participate with jobs available for veterans of all ranks and levels of experience.  All attending veterans will have the opportunity to enter their names in a raffle to win a wedding package worth up to $20,000 from the Hilton Chicago. Paul Rieckhoff, Iraq veteran and IAVA Founder and Executive Director, and Ross Cohen, Afghanistan veteran and Senior Director of the U.S. Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative, will be available for interviews at the fair. Veterans can sign up for the free Smart Job Fair and learn more about participating employers here.

In the coming months, IAVA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will sponsor additional Smart Job Fairs in Atlanta, Dallas and New York City. Veterans can register to attend in these cities here.

In 2012, IAVA is tackling veterans’ unemployment on every front, in both the public and private sectors. The Smart Job Fair initiative is part of IAVA’s Employment Program to engage both sectors on solutions to ease veterans’ transition from combat to career.  In Washington, IAVA is calling on Congress to pass legislation to incentivize the hiring of veterans, strengthen job protections and create new programs to ensure they are career-ready after service. In the private sector, the program brings together corporate partners including Microsoft, Google, jcpenney, Citi and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to host job fairs, career skills workshops and hiring initiatives for new veterans.  For a complete list of our partners and to learn more about IAVA’s Employment Program, click here.
