WHAT: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, the nation’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, will partner with the Veteran Success Center for a career training workshop in San Francisco on Thursday, October 4th. The event is free for service members and veterans of all eras and their spouses as they transition into the civilian workforce. The workshop is being held during San Francisco’s Fleet week, a nonprofit event celebrating the rich naval tradition in the Bay Area. Fleet Week honors the men and women serving in today’s armed forces and facilitating annual disaster preparedness training with the Navy, Marines and local first responders.

The career workshop is designed to connect Bay Area veterans with critical employment resources, including resume writing, interview training and networking tips to ease their transition from combat to career. The Department of Labor reported new veteran joblessness at 10.9% in August, making programs like this one more critical than ever. In 2011, the unemployment rate for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in California was 20%, compared to the average state unemployment rate of 11.7%.

WHERE: The Veteran Success Center at the War Memorial Veterans Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102

WHO: The event is open to veterans of all eras and their spouses. Participants can sign up for the workshop here. Attendees will be able to draw on a host of employment resources provided by the Veterans Success Center and IAVA. Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark and IAVA Founder and CEO Paul Rieckhoff will be in attendance.

The mission of the Veteran Success Center is to provide veterans with necessary resources to successfully transition to civilian life and has received substantial support from IAVA Board Member and Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark. IAVA is tackling veterans’ unemployment in both the public and private sectors, partnering with organizations like the Veteran Success Center all across the country. In Washington, IAVA is calling on Congress to pass legislation to incentivize the hiring of veterans, strengthen job protections and create new programs to ensure they are career-ready after service. In the private sector, IAVA  brings together corporate and nonprofit partners including Microsoft, Google, jcpenney and Citi to host job fairs, career skills workshops and hiring initiatives for new veterans nationwide.
