Veterans Day 2012 Unites New Veterans and Supporters Nationwide

Hundreds Gather in More than 20 Cities Nationwide November 10th and 11th

NEW YORK (Nov. 8, 2012) – Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, announced a full schedule of open press activities nationwide to commemorate an historic Veterans Week, beginning on November 10th, 2012. On the heels of an election that sent a record number of veterans to Congress, IAVA is bringing together veterans and civilian supporters nationwide to honor and unite around one of our community’s core values: service.

This year, IAVA will organize local parades, service projects and memorial services in more than 20 cities nationwide. Working with local and national organizations across America, IAVA will contribute to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts and other community service projects. This combined effort will help the over 177,000 new veterans in New York and over 78,000 in New Jersey, along with their neighbors, get back on their feet.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend and cover IAVA’s flagship events in New York, and local events from Austin, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and St. Louis where IAVA Member Veterans will be available for interviews on November 10th and 11th.  A full list of IAVA’s events can be found at the Veterans Week headquarters on

IAVA will also host its Sixth Annual Heroes Gala on Tuesday, November 13th at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.  Taking place just two days after Veterans Day, with NBC’s Brian Williams serving as Master of Ceremonies once again, this year’s star-studded night is the premier event of New York’s Veterans Week. IAVA will honor Sesame Street Founder Joan Ganz Cooney and 9/11 Memorial Board Member Peter G. Peterson as recipients of IAVA’s 2012 Civilian Service Award. IAVA will also present Roger Waters, formerly of Pink Floyd, with our inaugural 2012 Artistic Leadership Award. IAVA’s 2012 Veteran Leadership Award honoree will be announced on November 11th.

Past Heroes Gala honorees, performers and attendees include Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, Norah Jones, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, Super Bowl Champion Coach Bill Cowher, newly elected Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, best-selling author Wes Moore, Dancing with the Stars winner J.R. Martinez, ABC’s Bob Woodruff, Doonesbury’s Garry Trudeau, Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark and Morning Joe’s Willie Geist. The Heroes Gala is open to press during the general reception only from 6:30-7:30 PM ET.

“Veterans Day this year is a unique moment for our community. Tuesday’s election brought in an historic number of new veterans into Congress, and our relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy remind us all what being a veteran is all about – service,” said IAVA Founder and CEO Paul Rieckhoff. “Every year on November 11th, the country pauses to honor the men and women who served our country overseas. This year, we hope America sees that those same men and women are still serving here at home. With our support, they truly are becoming the New Greatest Generation.”

“Our new veterans have unique potential to usher in a new kind of leadership in Washington, and a return to our country’s core values from coast to coast. Every community across the country should be welcoming our veterans back home with support and respect, helping them transition to civilian life and fulfill their full potential. Veterans Day is a day to celebrate all generations of veterans, their families and our great nation. And in New York, it’s a day to show the world that the city is united and strong as we rebuild after Hurricane Sandy.”
