IAVA Receives $50,000 Walmart Grant to Support New York Veterans
and Their Families with Education and Employment

NEW YORK (Jan. 9, 2013) — Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America has received a $50,000 grant from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to support veterans and their families throughout the state of New York.

IAVA will use the funds to launch a state-of-the-art online jobs tool in early 2013. The funding will also allow IAVA to support veterans in their search for employment by using IAVA’s online Community of Veterans network. Additionally, the Walmart grant will fund a Wall Street Job Fair aimed at connecting the newest generation of veterans with employers looking to hire and support vets.

“Transitioning from the military to civilian workforce isn’t easy,” IAVA’s founder and CEO Paul Rieckhoff said. “The funds provided by Walmart to support IAVA’s employment support services will allow us to conduct comprehensive outreach, expand our scope and reach many more veterans than otherwise possible. These efforts will provide veterans with increased employment opportunities, critical job readiness support and a sustainable path to employment.”

The $50,000 grant was received through Walmart’s State Giving Program, which the Walmart Foundation supports to create opportunities so people can live better.

“Walmart is extremely honored to be supporting IAVA’s programs and mission to improve the lives of veterans,” said Dave Cardello, Walmart’s vice president and regional general manager. “IAVA’s work help empowers those who have fought for this country and we’re proud to be supporting their transition from war to the civilian workforce. These programs will leave a lasting impact on veterans and their families.”

Headquartered in New York City, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the nation’s first and largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and has more than 200,000 Member Veterans and civilian supporters nationwide. IAVA recently received the highest rating – four-stars – from Charity Navigator, America’s largest charity evaluator.
