IAVA Statement on Death of Senator Frank Lautenberg

Senator Lautenberg, WWII veteran, will be remembered as fierce advocate for new greatest generation

Today, Senator Lautenberg of New Jersey passed away at the age of 89 following complications from viral pneumonia. With his passing, Senator John McCain is the only veteran serving in the U.S. Senate. Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) has released the following statement.

“Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) mourns the loss of a true public servant and great champion for veterans of all generations. Senator Lautenberg, the last veteran of World War II to serve in the Senate, fought throughout his career to improve the lives of those who wore the uniform. As the original co-sponsor of the Post-9/ll G.I. Bill in 2008, and the author of the original Stop Loss Pay Bill of 2009, veterans had no stronger advocate or greater role model,” said Paul Rieckhoff, CEO and founder of IAVA. “As we remember his legacy, IAVA is grateful for his service to our nation, on the battlefield and here at home. Our thoughts are with his family.”
