Vets Call for Advance Appropriations for All VA

WASHINGTON (October 30, 2013) – Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America today joined other leading veterans groups and leaders from the House and Senate Committees on Veterans’ Affairs to demand congressional approval of legislation to extend advance appropriations to all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) programs. In 2009, Congress passed and President Obama signed legislation to fund VA health care one year in advance. Legislation is needed to fund all of VA for one year in advance.

IAVA’s Chief Policy Officer Tom Tarantino spoke at the press conference:

“If anyone needs to know why we need advance appropriations for all of VA, they just need to look back at what happened during the government shutdown. Just as VA health care was protected during the shutdown, Congress should act now to ensure that veterans can access all VA support and services the next time politicians play political games,” Tarantino said.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (www.IAVA.org) is the nation’s first and largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and has more than 270,000 Member Veterans and civilian supporters nationwide. IAVA recently received the highest rating – four-stars – from Charity Navigator, America’s largest charity evaluator.
